Mathematics has been studied in Shandong University since the University was first established in the early 20th century. The Mathematical Institute aims to preserve and expand mathematical culture through excellence in teaching and research.
The Department of Mathematics of Shandong University is the country's first batch of doctoral and master's degree authorization points. It is one of the first five "National Science Basic Science Research and Teaching Talent Cultivation Bases" established in 1991. It was identified as a doctoral degree authorization center in mathematics in 1998. In 2007, it was appraised as "the first batch of national first-level key disciplines", including five second-level key disciplines of basic mathematics, computational mathematics, operations research and cybernetics, applied mathematics, probability theory, and mathematical statistics. The mathematics discipline of Shandong University is a supporting discipline for the national "985 Project" and "211" key discipline construction projects. In 2017, the mathematics discipline of Shandong University was selected as one of the nation's "double first-class" construction ranks.
The overall level of Shandong University's mathematics discipline is at the forefront of the country, ranking third in the subject evaluation of the Ministry of Education in 2012, and tied for A + with Peking University and Fudan University in the fourth round of national subject evaluation in 2017, continuing to enter the top 1% of the world in the ESI ranking. In the 2016 World's Best University Rankings published by USNews, mathematics ranks 47th in the world.
The MISRC provides a wide range of master courses including information security, financial mathematics and financial engineering, statistics, marine mathematics, and so on. The centre also sets up post-doctoral mobile stations in mathematics, systems science, statistics.
