Establishment Ceremony of Research Centre for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences of Shandong University

On the morning of November 10 2018, the establishment ceremony of the Centre for Research Centre for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences of Shandong University (hereinafter referred to as the "Centre") was held at the Qingdao campus. Liming Fan, President of Shandong University, Lei Guo, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of the National Centre for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jiaan Yan, Researcher of the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Anmin Li, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, professor at Sichuan University, Lixin Wu, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Vice Chairman of Qingdao CPPCC, Director of Qingdao Marine Science and Technology Pilot National Laboratory, Shenghao Han, Vice President of Shandong University and President of Qingdao Campus, Jianya Liu, Vice President of Shandong University and President of Weihai Campus attended the opening ceremony. Liming Fan issued the letters of appointment for the director of the centre and the director of the academic committee for academician Shige Peng and academician Lei Guo respectively. Shenghao Han announced the decision on the establishment of the centre. Academician Shige Peng, director of the centre, and Xiaoshan Gao, deputy director of the National Centre for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, signed a strategic cooperation agreement on behalf of both units. Academician Shige Peng issued letters of appointment for 13 specially invited professors of the Centre.


Academician Lixin Wu congratulated the establishment of the centre on behalf of all levels of Qingdao. He said that Shandong University's mathematics discipline has a profound accumulation and an outstanding tradition of attaching importance to academic cross-integration and innovation, and has made important contributions in academic research and talent training. The establishment of the centre is a landmark event. It not only reflects the important instructions of General Secretary Jinping's policy - education to strengthen the country, promote the construction of dual first-class and strengthen the construction of basic disciplines, but is also an important measure to gather and cultivate all kinds of top high-end talents. The centre’s establishment plays an important role in the new round of development of mathematics at Shandong University. The establishment of the centre meets the needs of Qingdao implementing the strategy of strengthening the country by the sea, promoting the conversion of old and new kinetic energy, and accelerating the development of comprehensive high-quality, and can provide important intellectual support and talent guarantee for local economic and social development. He hoped that the centre would strengthen cooperation with Qingdao National Key Laboratory of Oceans and achieve common development.


Academician Lei Guo, as an alumnus, expressed gratitude to his alma mater and proud of his achievements over the years. The centre aims to create a high-end platform for mathematical research and promote the in-depth development and application of mathematics and interdisciplinary subjects. She said that cross-disciplinary integration is an inevitable trend and mainstream direction of the development of science and technology. The establishment of a mathematical and cross-scientific research centre is not only necessary for the school to serve the national strategy, but also necessary to promote its own development, and establish a competitive advantage. Liming Fan points out three expectations for the centre: firstly, the centre should position at first-class academics. The centre must aim at world-class standards, take the initiative to interface with national strategies, realize strong alliances, improve the level of scientific research, and strive to achieve major breakthroughs in cutting-edge basic research and leading original achievements in discipline development, and strive to build the centre into an excellent platform for scientific research and talent training with great influence in the world. Secondly, the centre should build first-class faculty team. It is necessary to implement the strategy of strengthening the school by talents, and to create an innovative, high-level, composite interdisciplinary talent team with deep learning, reasonable structure, distinctive characteristics, broad subject thinking, academic vision; emancipate the mind, change the thinking mode, and innovate the system The mechanism really provides good resources and broad space for scientific researchers, and helps the school's first-class teachers team’s setting. Thirdly, train first-class talents. Focusing on national strategic needs and urgent needs for talents, organically integrate talent training with professional construction, service to society and discipline construction, condense the characteristics of disciplines, respond to the needs of the times, and cultivate world-class mathematics interdisciplinary talents with Chinese characteristics.
