Academician Guo Lei, Director of the Academic Committee of the Center, was awarded the 2019 IEEE Control System Society Hendrik W. Bode Lecture Prize

China Science and Technology News (Reporter Li Daqing) Recently, at the awards ceremony of the 57th Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Decision and Control Conference held in Miami, USA, President of the IEEE Control Systems Society Francesco Bullo announced: Researcher Guo Lei of the Institute of Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has been awarded the "2019 IEEE Control System Society Hendrik W. Bode Lecture Prize". Academician Guo Lei became the first Chinese scientist to receive this honor in history.

The award is named after Hendrik Wade Bode, a well-known pioneer of modern control theory and electronic communication. It is selected and awarded annually by the IEEE Control Systems Society to one scholar in the field of system control for their outstanding contributions to the science or engineering of control systems. Since its establishment in 1989, it has been awarded to 30 internationally renowned control scientists. At the same time, the winners were also invited to give the award-winning report "Bode Prize Lecture" at the IEEE Decision-making and Control Conference, the most influential annual conference in the field of international control systems. Academician Guo Lei will be invited to attend the IEEE Decision-making and Control Conference in Nice, France in December 2019, participate in the award ceremony, and make a winning report at the plenary session to introduce his important research results.

Guo Lei is a well-known system and control scientist in China. He is currently the director of the Academic Committee of the Research Center for Mathematical and Interdisciplinary Sciences of Shandong University, a distinguished researcher of the Institute of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the director of the National Center of Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He graduated from the Department of Mathematics of Shandong University in 1982 and received his Ph.D from Institude of Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1987. In 1993, he was awarded the Young Author Award by the World Conference of the International Federation of Automatic Control Federations for solving a long-standing unsolved theoretical problem of the stability and convergence of the well-known self-tuning regulator. He was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 1998, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2001, and a member of the Academy of Sciences in Developing Countries in 2002. In 2007, he was elected as a Fellow of the International Federation of Automatic Controls for "fundamental contributions to the theory of adaptive estimation and adaptive control of stochastic systems, and the study of the maximum capabilities of feedback mechanisms". He was elected a foreign academician of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences the same year and was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in 2014. He has been invited to give a one-hour conference report twice a year at the International Conference of Automatic Control Federations, and is the only mainland Chinese scholar to date. In recent years, he and his collaborators have made a series of original and important contributions on basic scientific issues such as distributed adaptive filtering theory, maximum capabilities of feedback mechanisms, large group system synchronization, game control systems, and the theoretical basis of PID controllers and actively promoted the successful application of advanced control theory and methods in some key control engineering issues in aerospace and other fields.
